Filastine And The Cathedral Of Junk

April 4, 2012 - Grey Filastine, an electronic artist loosely based in Barcelona, loves a good party, a beat and a shopping cart wired for sound. With that in mind, we asked him to perform at a junkyard in Austin — not just any junkyard, either, but a place called “The Cathedral of Junk.”

So turns out Justin Vernon of Bon Iver visited the set of Jimmy Fallon after their SNL taping and did an 8-minute version of Perth, albeit auto-tuned throughout. It’s quite lovely, actually.

New video for “Gone” by Vacationer, whom I got to catch at dFm’s Creme de la Creme showcase at CMJ last month— loved their set, which was a bit more dancey than this track. Having trouble finding more than two songs online from these guys, but hoping that changes soon…

vacationer:

We are proud to present our new video for “Gone.”  Please spread the warmth.

Recently, Hot Chip frontman Alexis Taylor joined forces with Charles Hayward (This Heat), John Coxon (Spring Heel Jack, Spiritualized), and Pat Thomas to form the About Group. Following in his footsteps, Hot Chip members Al Doyle and Felix Martin, alongside engineer Tom Hopkins, have formed their own side project in New Build. LCD Soundsystem aficionados will note that Doyle was also a long-time member of the LCD lineup, thus making this new outing something of a supergroup. While the trio are the only fixed members, the band will work with a continually-rotating cast of collaborators. Their debut release, Misery Loves Company, will be a limited-edition 12″ comprised of three tracks and featuring contributions from other ex-LCD Soundystem members. LCD Soundsytem drummer Pat Mahoney guests on “Guitar Man”, while Planningtorock (Janine Rostron) remixes “Finding Reasons”. Check out samples of all three tracks below (via FACT).

The Experiment

When I was up in NYC for CMJ a couple weeks ago, I haphazardly caught a three-piece dance band from Sydney called Art vs Science at the dubFrequency showcase. Their sound differs a bit from song to song, but reminds me of Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Justice, and even Talking Heads and NIN at times. Super fun.

Latest album dropped back in February entitled The Experiment and is streamable on SoundCloud.

When there’s nothing left to burn, you must set yourself on fire.

“Good Luck” by Sondre Lerche

I had a bad dream
and as the night progressed
drenched in silliness, I watched it all unfold
Oh dear, if there is any truth to this
Somebody wake me and serve up some good white lies

I had a bad dream in which the phone would ring
and drown out everything that kept me on my feet
But down in streets so quiet now
I could hear ticking for meters and barns
When I fall asleep and I climb these four walls
Wake up in the middle of conference calls
that go on forever for nothing at all

Good luck
Don’t you feel so bad
Just don’t get your hopes up
Oh, there’s no reason why …
